Suriname’s mining history dates back to the early 17th century when small-scale mining activities were undertaken by explorers and settlers. However, large-scale mining gained prominence in the 19th and 20th centuries, particularly with the discovery of rich bauxite deposits, which dominated the country’s mining industry for decades. The gold mining sector emerged strongly in the late 20th century and has since become one of the country’s key economic drivers. Suriname’s vast mineral wealth continues to attract significant investment, contributing to its economic development.

There is also a notable presence of artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM), which often occurs in remote areas.

Today, Suriname is home to several top international mining companies that play a vital role in the gold sector:

• Zijin Mining – A Chinese company that operates the Rosebel Gold Mine, a world-class gold project and one of South America’s largest operational open-pit gold mines².
• Newmont Corporation – This American mining giant operates the Merian Gold Mine, which produces over 300,000 tonnes of gold per year³.
• Founders Metals – Canadian-based exploration company focused on advancing the Antino Gold Project located in Suriname, is a top performer on the TSX Venture Exchange.
• Green Heart Gold – A Canadian corporation trading on the TSX Venture Exchange, is a spin-off of the business combination between G Mining Ventures Corp. and Reunion Gold Corporation completed on July 15, 2024.
• Miata Metals – Canadian-based gold exploration company recently acquired the Sela Creek Gold Project in Suriname.

The continued development of the mining sector positions Suriname as a key player in the global mining industry, especially in gold production.
